I have had tankless in my last two houses in a span of over twenty years. They work by super heating water as it passes through a series of coils. Most European countries use only these type of heaters. They only heat the water when you turn on the faucet so you are not keeping a tank full of water heating in your basement just waiting for you to use it. I would never have any other type of heater. Mine have been gas fired and have saved me a tremendous amount of $. Yes, they do hook up to the same water lines that your other heater is attached to. They take up a whole lot less room as they just hang on the wall. They have longer guarantees and and will not wear out like a tank heater. They are more expensive than the tank type, but you will make up the savings in less than a year. One of the greatest advantages is that you could stay in the shower for hours and never run out of hot water. The only disadvantage that I have had was that I couldn't run hot water from two taps at the same time and get hot enough water as mine couldn't keep up with that kind of demand. However, my current heater is ten years old and I am told that they have now made them capable of providing enough hot water. |
