No! How much will it cost to install a tankless unit? Cost to install a tankless unit varies greatly. We usually must perform an estimate in order to determine total cost. However, total cost generally ranges from $2,000-4,500 installed. The bottom line: Tankless water heaters cannot be justified on the basis of reducing water heating cost. Our calculations indicate expected paybacks of more than 25 years.

The cost to install is stated correctly above but if you are doing the work yourself it will be less that that. The cost of the unit and materials is all you will be paying for. If you can provide the labor, the payback will be fairly good, especially if you qualify for the government rebates which are still active (go to dsireusa.org/ to check your area). Unless you optimize the installed location (tankless heater closest to the point of use) you will still be wasting water and energy because of Lag. Make sure you do not install this in a confined space (inspector will check this) and use the proper venting materials. Good info on all this is below in the source.
