Can i have an electric tankless water heater in an apartment rental?

Question: Can i have an electric tankless water heater in an apartment rental?

(Posted by: karen s on 2010-03-07 08:36:32)

I am clueless about tankless water heaters other than I like the idea of it. My apartment has an old electric water heater. I'd like to get a tankless but I dont want it permanantly installed. Is there a way to just disconnect the old one and have this one installed so it can be reversed if I move out? and can the average joe install one or is it pretty complicated if one is good at following directions? We use very little hot water as it is so the smallest unit is all we would need.

Not at all cost effective

Ask the landlord. However one of those are installed there has to be work done on the plumbing, which he may not want.

This is way too much for the average Joe, tankless water heaters are expensive and you have to pay someone to install it, then you need a place to put the old one, then have it reinstalled when you move.

Not only are you looking at plumbing but since these devices are normally 8.5 to 9.5 kW it would need a separate cable installation. In the US it would need to be 220 volt system but I don't know the wire guage they use, in the UK you would have to use 10 sq mm cable. If you can't talk your landlord into doing it for you then forget it.
