Benefit of gas vs. electric. Do they save money over normal water heaters?

Yes they are more efficient but when I figure in the cost of installation and the fact that gas is the only type that is really practical I wonder about the actual payback with changing to one. The only way I would consider one would be for a new installation where I had no plumbing yet installed and even then I am skeptical about actual savings when you consider the actual loss that occurs in a tank type water heater that is well insulated as they are now coming from the factory. Just an opinion

Yes they save money. an instantaneous water heater only heats the water when you turn on the faucet. A standard water heater with a tank has to keep a whole tank of water warm all the time, day and night.

The gas vs. electric depends on your location, but in most places natural gas, if available, is cheaper than electricity.

If you go gas, you will need an exhaust vent run. Many people are looking at the possible "cost saving " of tankless heaters. I agree that they can save money on energy but the initial cost is very high. If you are on a well, forget it. The tubing will get clogged with miineral deposits. While many Plumbers will install a tankless, not all of them do service on them. Make sure you have someone who will do repairs if necessary.

Tankless is better, but it is expensive. Your looking at about 750 to 1000 dollars Just for the Heater. This does not include installation. The difference between gas or electric will depend on where you live and the cost of both. Now adays, I would say electric.
